HIS SPARK

Artist Statement

When prompted with the theme “Spark”, my mind went down a plethora of different avenues of what I could design my exhibition pieces around. I started to really give the theme a lot of thought, and realized that what sparks my creativity is the grungy aesthetic of vintage design, objects, movie posters, etc. I find it fascinating that some of the most iconic pieces of graphic design history were done long before an Adobe applications ever existed. It really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into something like a  1980’s movie poster, album cover, VHS cover, book cover, and so on. It is because of this high level of artistry, that the design of the 1980’s will always be timeless.

For my exhibition pieces, I aimed to recreate the 1980’s vintage aesthetic with my own modern touch in each of the pieces. Each piece is VHS themed in order to achieve the vintage style that I was going for.
