Artist Statement
My name is Kimberly Alitza, and I am a graphic designer and florist from Saltillo Coahuila, Mexico. For HUE, our student exhibition, I created my poster series Ever-green. Green, one of my favorite colors because of its versatility. It is the color of decay and regeneration. I decided that, in a way, I wanted to make a connection between the meanings of this multifaceted color and my path to becoming a graphic designer. In this poster series, I communicated a set of emotions, situations, and feelings into graphics in the shape of nature, which is something I respect and find a lot of my inspiration.
Using Procreate for iPad, I designed illustrations that I then modified and used on Adobe Illustrator. I also manipulated typography and use hand lettering for this execution. My process starts with looking at imagery I find appealing and translate it into my style and ideas. Sketching and digitizing my drawings until they take the final form of my finalized posters. These three posters are different meanings of the color green that an affinity with my path to becoming a designer and interpreting them.
Green is balance. When I started my journey to become a graphic designer, I felt very confident about my decision and ability to learn and create things. I was very comfortable around my classmates and professors and felt excited to start to create new things. I distributed my responsibilities more efficiently and was in a better spot mentally. As time went by, things began to change.
Green is sickness. After the euphoria of a new change started to fade, I began to run into a few obstacles on my journey. I began to feel sick, sick of the load I was taking between classes and work, sick of being around people, and sick when the pandemic started. I was exhausted, and sometimes it is hard to be creative when you’re not in a good state. It was hard for me to keep up. It still sometimes is.
Green is hope. But at the end of the day, I am now just hoping for the future. To create and share my designs and ideas as a professional and have a lighter load once I graduate. I will focus more on graphic design and art, and I am excited about it. I am curious and excited to see where my creativity can take me.
This poster series is a showcase of skills that I acquired and refined under the instruction of my professors at TAMUCC. I am grateful for their teaching, time, and belief in me. They are part of the designer I am today. I enjoy communicating ideas with solid visuals and layouts, and I believe that as a designer, that is what we do. I like to share more of myself with the work that I make, and I feel that this poster series is a fragment put into visuals of what I lived, confronted, and overcame these past years.
