I’m Malena and I’ll be graduating from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi this spring with two degrees, in graphic design and acting! When I’m not designing or illustrating you can find me at the local nursery adopting a new plant for my apartment or in a coffee shop with my nose buried in a book. Illustration and design have always been a way for me to bring life to other people’s ideas and my own, a way to put a little bit of creativity and magic into the world! My goal as a designer is to form relationships with my clients in order to give them a meaningful product, as unique as their individuality.

Hello, I’m Malena Margo! Storytelling and illustrations are my favorite ways to bring ideas to life. There is something powerful and freeing about being able to illustrate what’s inside your head rather than simply speak it.
I utilized Procreate, an app for the IPad, to bring this story to life. My process starts off with a simple pencil and paper sketch, which I then photograph and import into Procreate to trace with the brushes I have purchased. The final product comes together once the illustrations are complete and they are brought into Adobe Illustrator to be put together as a finalized poster.
This year has been full of the unexpected. It has been a year of challenges, of losses, of unimagined hardships. I found myself falling without anything to catch me. There was an overwhelming sense of anxiety that constantly filled my mind, something that I simply could not get rid of. I was afraid to speak out about it, afraid to take the steps to “get rid of it” or to “silence it.” After a few months of acknowledging that anxiety had become a part of my life, I realized you can’t get rid of it, there’s no silencing it. Anxiety simply is, it does not go away when you ask it to, even if you try your hardest. You could read every book in the world on how to get rid of your anxiety, all of the self help books telling you that “this doesn’t have to be your life,” and I can promise you after all of that, it will still be there. So this is my story. My story about accepting anxiety for who she is. Learning to love her, to help her blossom, to lead her down the right path, because at the end of the day she is not going anywhere. Anxiety can become something beautiful, something helpful, something that can keep you out of harm’s way.
I found that when talking about mental health it is easiest to personify your feelings and your battles. This story is a personification of anxiety. Through hand drawn illustrations and hand written type I have created a story that acts as a visual representation of what accepting and growing with your anxiety looks like.
